What Is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is a two person conversation in a private, one hour format where a person meets with their director and he/she helps guide a conversation about the directee’s spirituality. Spiritual directors are more like companions than mentors, helping to identify and encourage the movements of God in a person’s life. Unlike counselors or therapists, spiritual directors do not generally give advice or diagnose problems; instead they journey with someone to explore their own spirituality, questions, or uncertainty. They look for the invitations of God and the direction together.
Why Try Spiritual Direction?
Anyone at any stage of their journey can benefit from spiritual direction–I’ve met with people who don’t believe in a personal God, and I’ve met with people who have been following Jesus longer than I’ve been alive. I find that many people begin spiritual direction when they are in a season of loss, transition, uncertainty, or the old spiritual pathways aren’t working for them anymore. You won’t get advice or easy answers, you’ll get a committed companion who aims to reflect back what I notice God already doing in your life. He is always moving and inviting, but sometimes it helps to have someone else who will sit still and pay attention to God with you.
